Michael Kennedy is an award-winning, genre-jumping director with a reputation for creating stylish films that achieve both critical and commercial success. He has directed 14 feature-length films/MOW’s and over 125 television episodes including every episode of the first season of CBC’s ground-breaking sitcom, “Little Mosque On The Prairie”. He has received 2 Directors Guild of Canada Awards and a nomination for a Directors Guild of America Award. This fall alone Michael is nominated for a total of 5 directing awards: a Gemini nomination for “Little Mosque…”; 2 DGC Award nominations, one for Drama (“North/South”) and one for Comedy (“Little Mosque…”); and 2 Canadian Comedy Award nominations (“This Space For Rent” and “Little Mosque…”).
Other honors include: another Best Director Gemini nomination; 3 wins from 7 nominations for Best Director at the Canadian Comedy Awards; Best Director, Canadian Music Video Awards, for "Terriers", one of 25 short films he directed for "Kids In The Hall". “Joe’s Wedding”, his award-winning romantic-comedy feature, was selected for many international film festivals.
Michael has often been brought in early to help develop a new TV series. Besides the pilot of “Little Mosque…” he directed the first episodes filmed and/or aired of: “North South”, “My Life and a Movie”, “Mental Block”, “Listen Missie”, “Screech Owls”, “Blackfly” (after pilot), “P.R.”, “Taking The Falls”, and “Jets”. His writing credits include several theatrical feature scripts, including three of the features he directed.
His latest film, “Isabella Rocks”, is a murder mystery but his versatility is revealed in his other work: “The Possession of Michael D.”, based on the true story of a psychological exorcism starring Stephen Lang and Sheila McCarthy; “Hostile Force”, a thriller starring Andrew McCarthy; and “Hard Evidence”, which explores blackmail and family bonds.
His international reputation has led Michael to direct films in many countries: “Jets”, an ambitious TV movie about young cadets in the German Luftwaffe, was filmed in Munich, Texas, and Los Angeles; “Broken Lullaby”, a romantic mystery starring Mel Harris was filmed in Budapest; “One Man Out” in Mexico; “Caribe” in Belize; and “Calculated Risk”, a highly rated TV thriller, was filmed in Germany.
Michael, his wife, their three children, and his collection of 275 tacky snowdomes usually reside in a Toronto suburb, dreaming of their summers in Michael’s home province, Prince Edward Island.
