Born in New York in 1926, Mel made his start in showbiz as a stand-up comic, becoming a writer for television, and doing a variety of odd jobs in film. His experimental first short film won an Oscar, and with his first feature, The Producers, Brooks began an ongoing streak of comedic appeal and success. His films are known for the use of parody and farce, Jewish references, recurring gags, song-and-dance numbers, and for often featuring Brooks himself in a starring role.
