Directed by Brian Robbins A crew of miniature aliens operate a spaceship that has a human form. While trying to save their planet, the aliens encounter a new problem, as their ship becomes smitten with an Earth woman (Banks). REVIEW: As its heart, Meet Dave is a tribute to earthling film. It's basically about how aliens realize that these earth people do have some redeeming qualities and are actually not half bad. They were going to destroy them/us because we aren't that evolved, but the closer they looked, the more they realized there is actually something to them. This is a film that we need to have because I mostly see the opposite -- how we're destroying the earth, how we're a selfish race etc.. I do think that we're better than we're worse and this film reminds us of that. Too bad it isn't a very good film. Meet Dave is a film that could of been great if they just spent more time on their central thematic. What a great idea too, and I can't think of a better actor playing the role within many roles than Eddie Murphy. As a kid I really thought that there were other mini-humans inside of me controlling all of the many functions in my body. I had a brain guy, a heart girl and an assembly line of people controlling my arms and legs. So I was immediately taken into the imaginative world of Meet Dave. This is one of those rare films where the editing takes you out of the movie. Editing is something an audience member should never really think about as it should just be there. But when you go from a scene of Dave waking up in the morning to him at an amusement park at night you are left scratching your head. What happened during the moments in between in this 48 hour story? You can tell that this was a film that they scrambled to put together in the editing room. Something bad happened during filming as they just didn't get the footage they needed and probably didn't have the money to do reshoots. So we're watching the film knowing that something is missing. We're not as emotionally involved as we should be. Meet Dave is a film that will be forgotten in two weeks time and actually should be remade with a different team of artists in perhaps 10 years because this has the potential to be a WALL-Esque film. They spent all of this money and they have a really good idea. But why can't they just go all the way? Eddie Murphy vehicle films need to learn to spend as much time on the scripts as they do on the special effects and cool stuff they want to do! This film upsets me because I see the potential for such a great movie. These are the types of films we need to have these days. There just needs to be more. Filmmaking is hard work and I just don't think they worked hard enough to give us a good film. 2 stars out of 4!
