Matt Hotson grew up preferring comic books and illustration as a means of visual storytelling. However, in high school, a media teacher encouraged him to experiment with video, which he did with a newfound enthusiasm. After obtaining a Certificate in Art Fundamentals from Sheridan College in 2004, Matt began studying Film Production at York University.
“The Adventures of Ratman” is his 3rd-year Fiction project. The film is based on his favourite childhood book (of the same name), which the authors granted him the rights to, free of charge. The film was shot over 5 days in February 2007, and was funded out of his own pocket, with the assistance of his family and a PS Production Services grant. The film has screened in 10 film festivals across North America so far.
Matt still harbors a desire to be a cartoonist and a comic book writer / illustrator, but has fallen in love with film. He has an interest in becoming a director and an assistant director in the Canadian film industry. He currently lives in Toronto and is in pre-production on his final York project (to be completed April 2008), entitled “Partners.”
