LINDA FREENY PODCAST November 19 2009 - PRESS PLAY TO LISTEN

11 Questions with Linda Freeny. FALL 2009 Short Screenplay Finalist

WHAT IS YOUR SCREENPLAY ABOUT?

A man’s picture is flashed on National TV in order to identify him after he is hurt in an accident. It produces surprising results.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO WRITE THIS SCREENPLAY?

It was an assignment at a Writers Conference. Just the title was given. The rest was up to the writer. My script won.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WRITING SCREENPLAYS?

Many years.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ALL TIME FILM?

Pretty Woman

WHAT ARTIST IN THE FILM INDUSTRY WOULD YOU LOVE TO WORK WITH?

Sandra Bullock

HOW MANY SCREENPLAYS HAVE YOU WRITTEN?

14 (All genres, except scifi).

IDEALLY, WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE IN 5 YEARS?

With more than one screenplay produced.

DESCRIBE YOUR PROCESS: DO YOU HAVE A SET ROUTINE, METHOD FOR WRITING?

Just when it strikes me. I start with a title and subject and go from there. I do not storyboard, just write as I go along. I like to be just as surprised about the ending asthe audience.

APART FROM WRITING WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT?

Animals.

WHAT INFLUENCED YOU TO ENTER THE WILDSOUND CONTEST.

I was emailed about the contest. This is the first and only time this script has been entered in anything since it won the Writers Conference.

ANY ADVICE YOU WOULD LIKE TO PASS ON TO OTHER WRITERS?

Write what appeals to you, not the market. You have to enjoy writing. I have just finished a western (first ever western) and had a great time with it. I am writing another western even though they aren’t “in”. Someday they will be again. Do not let rejection change the way you feel about the kind of writer you know yourself to be. Keep writing and keep submitting. Try to get with a group of writers at least once a month and read your work out loud. You will get some amazing input. Give back that same input to your fellow writers and make it honest. Take criticism, and if it comes from a source you trust, it will make you a better writer.
