REVIEW:

The name Matthew Vaughn has been floating around since the late 90s and was heavily linked with Guy Richie; king of the ‘London-geezer gangster film’. Vaughn is a close friend of Richie and was the producer of Richie’s most famous films -including the torrid ‘Swept Away’ (2002). After shadowing Richie for the many years, it seems Vaughn wanted to try his hand at his own British gangster film.

The opportunity came in the form of ‘Layer Cake’; a novel written by J.J Connelly. Matthew Vaughn adapted this film with such delicacy and attention that really makes this a smart, intelligent gangster film. I’ve personally never been a big fan of Richie’s ‘cool’ gangster films and to me it is such a pleasant surprise to see that Vaughn hasn’t just copied Richie’s style and he has created something entirely original.

‘Layer Cake’ (or ‘L4yer Cak3’, as others may recognise the title) tells the complicated tale of ‘XXXX’ played by Daniel Craig (well, that’s how his character is listed in the credits). He is a successful cocaine dealer who is perfectly happy living life without any form of infamy, and he is planning an early retirement. He is given an assignment by his boss Jimmy (Kenneth Cranham) to find Jimmy’s good friend Edward’s (Michael Gambon) missing daughter. Complicating matters are millions of pounds worth of ecstasy, a Serbian gang and numerous double crossings. XXXX finds himself breaking all his rules to constantly remain on top of matters.

The start of the film divulges a really interesting and engaging insight to possible reasons for the thugs’ relationship to drug dealing. XXXX explains that in the 60s criminals were spending 12 years in prison for armed robbery along with ‘hippies’ that were doing 12 months for smuggling 2 million pounds worth of cocaine into the country (As XXXX himself puts it, “We’re in the wrong game”). The film becomes increasingly smarter from then on.
