11 Questions with LATISHA WASHINGTON. A WILDsound FALL 2008 Feature Screenplay Finalist

1. What is your screenplay about?

A fifteen year old kid venturing the dangerous streets in her city in search of a peace of mind from her troubled home reluctantly gaines the help of nosey neighbors and citizens to point her in the right direction from her destructive life.

2. Why did you decide to write this screenplay?

I wrote SUGAR so others could get a realistic understanding of what life is for someone who is struggling to cope and live with a family member who has a mental illness. The screenplay brings to light the strained relationship of a mother and daughter and the importance of holding on and never giving up.

3. How long have you been writing screenplays?

I'm fairly new to screenwriting

4. What is you all-time favorite film? (name only one)

Lean On Me is my favorite movie

5. What artist in the film industry would you love to work with?

I would love to work with Morgan Freeman.

6. How many screenplays have you written?

This is my first screenplay. I'm currently working on my second.

7. Ideally, where would you like to be in 5 years?

In the next 5 years, I want to be working as a Hollywood screenwriter.

8. Describe your process; do you have a set routine, method for writing?

My method of writing is coming up with an idea, then jotting notes and possible dialogue in a notebook, then write out the story.

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

I'm really passionate about helping people who don't have the means or know how to help themselves.

10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Script Contest?

I entered the Wild Sound Screenwriting Contest after reading about the possibility of having my screenplay read by actors. The feedback Wild Sound promises also influenced my decision to enter the contest. Feedback for a new screenwriter means a lot.

11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

My advice to any screenwriter is to have faith in your work and be open to criticism.
