11 Questions with KYLE ARRINGTON. A WILDsound WINTER 2009 TV Screenplay Finalist

1. What is your screenplay about?

My MAD MEN script is about realizing what illusions have been shattered and picking yourself up. It's about the times in which all your bad decisions had paved the way for hard times and how you deal with them.

2. Why did you decide to write this screenplay?

I wrote this script because I thoroughly enjoy the world of MAD MEN and the morally ambiguous character of Don Draper. There is such a plethora of directions in which the show could go that I envisioned a 2nd season in which Don is forced to confront all of the bad decisions he has made in his life and own up to them in order to find stability in his life.

3. How long have you been writing screenplays?

I have been writing screenplays for about 10 years now - especially my undergraduate and graduate years in which my concentration was writing.

4. What is your favorite TV show of all-time?

My absolute favorite television show is Futurama. But my favorite DRAMA television show is LOST.

5. What artist in the industry would you love to work with?

I've always wanted to work with David Gorden Green because I love the gritty southern world he creates in his independent films.

6. Who was your hero growing up?

My heroes growing up were Stanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock. They are the best male role models I've ever had.

7. Ideally, where would you like to be in 5 years?

I would like to be a staff writer on a serialized television show and also selling my screenplays on the side.

8. Describe your process; do you have a set routine, method for writing?

I write from 9-5 Monday through Friday. I begins by brainstorming and creating many many pages of notes then I narrow them down, build a rough outline, flesh it out day-by-day, build a sufficient step outline, begin to write the screenplay and edit my step outline according to the pages I actually write which inform the outline I've already created.

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

I am very passionate about basketball, science (specifically astronautics, physics of the impossible, string theory, time travel, etc.), film in general, music, playing drums, and my beautiful girlfriend.

10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Script Contest?

One of my friends who is a staff writer for the show Eureka suggested I submit my MAD MEN spec to the competition. Glad I did!

11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Never lose faith in your own skills. Always challenge and push yourself to be better. Read books on screenwriting, watch as many films as you can, and read as many screenplays as possible. Treat your writing like a 9-5 job and you will undoubtably impress yourself at the end of every week.
