I just got back from my first Star Trek experience. Never have I seen an episode of any of the TV programs or any of the many Trek movies made. Just didn't have an interest it in.
But doing what I do now, this is a film I had to see. While watching the film in a packed theater full of a lot of Trekkies, I knew I was missing something when they were laughing at situations that I didn't find funny or understood why it was funny. I guess there was an inside joke happening.
Besides that, I really enjoyed JJ Abram's Star Trek film. In recent PODCASTS I made the statements saying that these films are for kids, just like Star Wars was for us in that generation. The Sci-Fi fans have grown up, but this is not a film made for them but for the young boys and girls that they once were. And I think they have to come to terms with that.
The new Star Trek film is a story about friendship. It's the friendship origins story. How two people need each other in order for them to get the best out of themselves. And in order for them to be the friends that they are and need to be, they must get over themselves and their ego for the sake of themselves and for the sake of making the world a better place.
What a great story for kids?
Hollywood likes to give us a lot of romance stories, which is fine. And these days they also like to give us stories about guys who become friends but really can't function in the world as of yet. There are a lot of 'works in progress' male figures in the movies these days. Guys who are low on life, low on making good choices and are very selfish people. Think of Seth Rogen's last 4 films. Would you really want to be friends with these people?
Kirk and Spock are both great role models because they are confident in themselves but still understand that there is still a lot to learn about who they are and mankind in general. Role models that kids should be watching.
So the world of Trek grabbed me and pulled me in because they told me a story that is universal and will always stand the test of time. And it taught me a lot about my own relationships too. I have my Spock (or Kirk -- depending who you are talking to) in my life that pushes me and is there for me. Sometimes that friend is hard to deal with because they have too much honesty and you tend to see the flaws inside of yourself that must be dealt with when looking at them.
A great friend guides you in life and there are many times that these aren't the easiest times. But that's why they are a great friend. Yes, we can all have those relationships with the people we down beers with or go shopping with. The relaxing times. But the real definition of a friend is someone who tries to push you into the person you can be and vice/versa.
So Star Trek is the perfect movie for kids. And if you seasoned Trekkies fans can't deal with that, then you might of forgotten why you started watching the show in the first place. Just a thought.
