KAREN IVANY

Karen Ivany first studied classical and contemporary drama at the University of Windsor (Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting), and the Banff School of Fine Arts (Drama-Intermediate), before her audition and subsequent acceptance to the exclusive program at the University of Alberta (BFA-Acting). She’s also completed courses focusing on Shakespearean and Restoration texts with the National Theatre Summer Programme in London, UK, and on-camera technique at Equity Showcase Theatre, Toronto, among others.

She has performed on stages across Canada as an improviser with The Second City Touring Company. Favourite theatre roles include; Elvira in Blithe Spirit (Globus Productions, directed by Adrian Truss), Meredith in Something Unexpected (Toronto Fringe ’07), Carrie in Drinking Alone (Ford Centre for the Performing Arts), Jeannie in East of Elvis (Sudbury Theatre Centre), Pidge in Earheart (Lighthouse Festival), Shelly in Etta Jenks (Hamilton Place), Peggy in Nurse Jane Goes To Hawaii (Theatre on the Grand), Dromio of Ephesus in The Comedy of Errors (Banff Centre) and Cecily in The Importance of Being Earnest, a workshop adaptation by British director Nicholas Hynter.

Selected film/TV credits include; ReGenesis (TMN, Global), Wonderfalls (Fox TV, Global), A Dad for Christmas (CTV), Playing House (Lifetime), Crossed Over (CBS), Chasing Cain and This Is Wonderland (both for CBC), The John Dore Television Show and The Endless Grind (Comedy Network), as well as the short films Red Dress, Budapest (Female Eye Film Fest) and Back In ’93, which recently premiered at the Montreal World Film Festival and on Bravo!

Karen is currently serving her second term as an elected councilor for ACTRA Toronto, representing 13,000 performers. During her first term she implemented The Gordon Pinsent Studio, a free-for-use, fully equipped space for members to rehearse on-camera and self-tape casting submissions. Currently, Karen is creating the Actor’s Lending Library in the ACTRA Toronto offices. She is Chair of the Awards Committee and producer of the annual ACTRA Awards in Toronto.
