Jonny Silver travels the void between art and crime.
He produces his own art house films and works as a director-for-hire in both English and French sectors of the Canadian media industry. He grew up in Toronto and started making experimental films while attending the Ontario College of Art and Design.
His professional career began with, KUBOTA, his film profile of sculptor-musician, Nobuo Kubota, produced by the National Film Board of Canada. Silver went on to make profiles of other notable cultural figures including, media guru, Derek de Kerchove and dancer-choreographer, Marie-JosČe Chartier.
LONELY CHILD, his feature on the life and music of avant-garde composer, Claude Vivier, premiered at the MontrČal Film Festival and was shown around the world. He has directed doc, drama and performing arts and has been involved in co-ventures with both language studios of the NFB, CBC and TVO, and on international co-productions with former Yugoslavia and the French speaking broadcasters of Europe.
Silver’s highly individualistic style of story-telling found its way into prime-time television, where he became a specialist in murder and crime stories. He directed drama segments for forensic series, EXHIBIT ‘A,’ (CTV) and FORENSIC FACTOR (Discovery), and for three seasons of the crime series, 72 HOURS (CBC).
