11 Questions with JOHN WINSTON RAINEY. A WILDsound SUMMER 2009 One Screenplay Finalist

1. What is your screenplay about?

The urge to mate never dies. The heart embraces companionship any way it can.

2. Why did you decide to write this screenplay?

I wanted to enter this contest.

3. How long have you been writing screenplays?

22 years.

4. What film have you seen the most in your lifetime?

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA

5. What artist in the industry would you love to work with?

Steven Spielberg, Sir Ridley Scott, Steven Soderbergh, Clint Eastwood, Sam Mendes, Robert Rodriguez, Meryl Streep, Emma Thompson, Cate Blanchett, Kate Winslet, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Dakota Fanning, Abigail Breslin, Benicio Del Toro, Don Cheadle, Jeremy Irons, Ben Kingsley... I could go on. oh, you wanted only one.

6. Who was your hero growing up?

at 8, Superman; at 10, me (always making up stories in the backyard); 12, Michael Valentine Smith (STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND)

7. Ideally, where would you like to be in 5 years?

A constantly-working screenwriter/novelist multi-millionaire living in my elaborate condo in Riviera Village, Redondo Beach

8. Describe your process; do you have a set routine, method for writing?

Whether it's an assignment or a spec, I write from passion and inspiration. I contemplate before I write. I'm not one to slap ink on a page and call it writing. I'm not obsessive about it. I hate to waste time writing stuff that i know I'm going to toss later. I think about my story and characters 24/7. My stories come from character - always. Once I feel full, I pour it out until i'm empty. I don't watch a clock. I rewrite very little. For instance, the one-pager, PICKUP, is just like it came off my fingers the first time with no edits. I wrote it in about 30 minutes.

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

Piano, song-writing, poetry, performing poetry and monologues, yoga, meaningful conversation, spiritual awareness

10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Script Contest?

I read about it and it seemed like something I could do quickly and well.

11. Influence people to vote for your one page script?

Only because they think it is worthy of their vote. People should vote for what they think is good, not just to support someone.
