11 Questions with JOHN BETZ JR. and RANDY REESE. FALL 2009 TV Screenplay Finalist
1. What is your teleplay about?
John: The behind-the-scenes workings of a comedy club. Randy: and a look at the unusual characters and situations that occur.
2. Why did you decide to write this teleplay?
Randy: I owned a full service restaurant and comedy club for 7 years. In 2005 it was voted one of the Top 10 places to sit down and watch stand up in the USA by USAToday. As far as I knew, no other sitcom took place at an actual comedy club.
3. How long have you been writing screenplays?
John: 2-3 years. Randy: 2-3 years.
4. What is your favorite TV show of all-time?
John: Arrested Development Randy: It is a toss up between M*A*S*H and Night Court.
5. What artist in the industry would you love to work with?
John: Tina Fey Randy: Jason Batemen
6. Who was your hero growing up?
John: Steve Martin Randy: No one person, really. I thought a lot of people were cool.
7. Ideally, where would you like to be in 5 years?
John: Writing screenplays and sitcom episodes. Randy: Executive producing and directing sitcom episodes.
8. Describe your process; do you have a set routine, method for writing?
John: Just whenever the urge strikes. Randy: No set routine.
9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?
John: Stand-up comedy and mathematics. Randy: Improv comedy.
10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Script Contest?
Randy: My proximity to Toronto, along with the fact that should the script win I could attend the reading. I think it will be very valuable to get a feel for what and when the audience finds things funny.
11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?
John: Write, write, write. Randy: That and know people.
