11 Questions with 2010 Screenplay Finalist

JOEL AND GREG REEVES

1. What is your screenplay about?

Two space travelling con-men selling world peace out of their spaceship accidentally release Melgor Lich, the most diabolical criminal in the Universe, and must pursue him across a planet of hostile landscapes and alien life forms.

2. Why did you decide to write this screenplay?

We originally wrote this script as a novella under the title THE LAST SIGHTING OF MELOR LICH. We love science fiction and fantasy of all types. We had just finished writing a very dark script about Edgar Allan Poe and we were ready to write something of a lighter, more humorous variety, something that did not have the restrictions that come with writing a biographical drama.

3. How long have you been writing screenplays?

WE COME IN PEACE is our third screenplay. We have been writing screenplays for about five years.

4. What is your favorite MOVIE of all-time (name only one and explain why it's on top)?

ED WOOD. I love the passion of the title character, his quirkiness, and the performances of all of the actors. Wood had a vision, a peculiar one, but he definitely was someone outside the industry with a deep love for making movies. It's a very funny and sad movie at the same time.

5. What artist in the industry would you love to work with?

Johnny Depp.

6. Who was your hero growing up?

Detroit Tigers pitcher Mark "The Bird" Fidrych. He talked to the baseball. He loved the game and made fans and non-fans love the game, too. 7. Ideally, where would you like to be in 5 years?

We would like to be moderately successful, critically acclaimed authors.

8. Describe your process; do you have a set routine, method for writing?

We write sometimes as a team, sometimes individually. Our method involves writing a first draft from beginning to end -- whether it is a short story, novel, or screenplay. We sometimes take turns writing the same story. This system works well because one of is a morning person and the other is a night owl. It's sort of like writing in shifts.

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

We are both avid readers - especially science fiction and fantasy -- and we collect vintage fantasy and science fiction books. Family and frozen yogurt.

10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Script Contest?

The contest offers a wonderful opportunity for a screenwriter to get exposure for his or her work. The idea of having one's script performed by top-notch actors is the be all end all of the screenwriting process. WILDsound hosts producers and actors who have the influence in the industry to scripts and writers get noticed.

11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Don't judge yourself too harshly on that first draft. Just do your best to get the idea that's in your head down on paper. Finish the whole story in whatever form you've chosen to tell it. Find someone you can trust who can give you reliable feedback. Rewrite that story. Then write another story.
