I am working on a play called The Dreamer Examines his Pillow, by John Patrick Shanley. It is a great play and I am so happy I get to do it. It is a reading and it will be performed at the Tarragon Extra space Saturday. This play is about people not taking the risks to become who they truly are. And what I believe people truly are is GREAT. I highly recommend the play. The reading sold out about the time I got cast, so I wasn’t able to get the chance to ask people to come, but we might be doing another reading, because of the response the company has received. The company is called Theatre Best Before and their mandate is to do plays that don’t get a lot of attention in Canada.
Jesse Ryder Hughes and his ride to getting an Agent
I had signed with a great agency this week as well. It was interesting to have the experience of the pressure of getting an agent after school. It felt like that was something all of us in school had to do right away. This pressure disturbed me and made me a little stubborn and rebellious. It wasn’t just the pressure of an agent, but of getting into Stratford or Shaw, or any big company. It wasn’t the teachers at my school at all. They were really supportive. It was a lot of people my own age in the business really working hard to becoming a part of the unionized acting world, which is great, but I didn’t feel it at the time.
Jesse Ryder Hughes stands his ground
I did get an agent though, because I jumped the gun. It wasn’t that I didn’t want an agent, but I wasn’t ready. The pressure built up even though I challenged it in myself. I cracked and met the first agent that was interested in me. I knew it was a choice from the wrong place, but I went forward. The agent turned out to have some problems and started doing things my intuition wasn’t agreeing with. Long story short, I stood up finally and left, after I had enough. I felt a power in me I never knew I had that day, and that power was my right to say no. To stand up for myself and not let anyone bring me down. I am of course still struggling to stand my ground, but I know I can do it now.
Jesse Ryder Hughes just does what he feel is right
I started working really hard for myself and things started to happen, honestly and genuinely. Connections started to automatically come, I didn’t need to schmooze. I just had to be and do what I love to do. I started doing plays and being brought back, I wasn’t getting anything most of the time, but I felt this was the right thing to do. To let this simplicity rule my life for awhile, so I have time to get confident, and work on plays with new people. The time is coming for me to get out and make a living, but I’m enjoying this place where I am, and I will always enjoy it. My new agents had come to see me in my last show and they took a huge interest. I talked to them and knew that they were the ones for me. It felt natural and beautiful. Who knows what will happen next. Getting an agent was the next step for me.
Jesse Ryder Hughes Promotion
On a last note a good friend of mine has a new rehearsal space available. He rents it out for a great price and he has a lot of new performers coming in. I’ll be helping him out a lot, but if anyone needs space to rehearse, his name is Luis Fernandez and his number is 416-532-4422. He’s an awesome guy and good to have around. So if anyone is interested, just give him a call.
