Jesse Ryder Hughes latest BLOG entry
January 10th/2007

My name is Jesse Ryder Hughes and I'm a Canadian actor living in Toronto

I guess I’ll start by saying I’m a little nervous doing this, but that sums up a lot of my feelings as a young actor. Nervous about being cut right from the beginning of my career. Nervous of not having a career in what I love. That makes me get scared to do anything at all sometimes, but something pushes me to keep doing it and believing in the art I have chosen.

Jesse Ryder Hughes background

I grew up fascinated by film and stage. My parents would take me to the theatre, and recommend me good movies with great actors. I was in grade 6 when I knew I wanted to do it. I thought it would be the coolest to be a part of that world, like any young kid interested in acting. It wasn’t until high school I signed up for the Niagara Falls school of drama. A great thing I took from my teachers there was focus and disregarding politics and keeping aware of what is truly important to me (it made high school really interesting). I brought this attitude into post secondary theatre school. I learned my tools at Humber, and then they sent me off with a hundred other kids around Canada into the world. I got my first film job at the end of the summer in a war movie directed by Sidney J. Furie. This is where the questions I was wondering about in theatre school, really started to arise. I could go on about my thoughts about being a young actor, but I want to save them for another time. Right now the biggest thought I have is “why me?” What do I aspire to be?

Jesse Ryder Hughes and who he is right now

Some people I’ve seen just go for it, where others like myself are shy and sensitive, so we tend to think and feel and be patient for what is right. Both ways work. It may take me awhile, but I want to be a great actor, and not just for myself, but for the people around me. I want to show people human nature in my work, so they can easily connect and know, without realizing, that what I am doing is absolutely real and honest. This could be naïve, but that’s where I am. It’s also easier said than done for sure, I know this. It is going to take a lot of hard work, reading, awareness, and a lot of risks, like writing this blog. I may even need to quit video games, or maybe play them less.
