Jeremy LaLonde Blog March 25th

Jeremy LaLonde talks about being busy

I’ve been meaning to update my blog for the past two weeks but time has gotten away from me. Life has been busy, and in my way of thinking busy is good.

Mr. Mix

The sound mix for “Hoff’s New Direction” is complete. All that’s really left now is to master it and get it over to Bravo. I’m hoping to do that this week if all goes well. I really can’t wait to get this film in front of an audience. I finally got a chance to go to the Wildsound Feedback Film Festival and it got me excited about showing my work again. It also made me want to submit some of my older short works that haven’t seen the light of day in awhile. A couple of them haven’t had much play and I’m interested to see how they stand up a few years later. It’s always interesting seeing your work years after. I know a lot of people have a tough time because they see the missed potential. I get that a bit. I notice mistakes, etc… But I’m usually quite happy with how my stuff turns out. Whether it’s low expectations, or just being able to get exactly what I want out of something, I don’t know, but I hope it keeps working out that way.

The Mighty Pen

Had my monthly writer’s group meeting this week, part of which we discussed a treatment of mine for a feature. It went over quite well. It’s a script I’ve already done a draft for and now I’m retooling it with a different approach. There’s some weak areas, but I think it’s definitely a step in the right direction. The producer attached to it is applying for Greenberg with it, so that’ll be nice if we get some scratch to pay ourselves for development.

At any given moment I’ve got notes for a half a dozen or so scripts. Whenever I get an idea that fits one of them I add it to the note book that’s assigned to that story idea. Right now there’s a few of them that are on the verge of being ready to put some serious work into. I’m not really sure which one to tackle though. I’ve got the typical film for me, the kind of dramatic comedy type film that I normally write. There’s a horror film,
and then there’s this epic idea that’s been switching genres and formats for quite some time now. That script is arguably the closest, but it’s also interesting for me in that it’s a much bigger idea than I’ve really tackled before. It’s a little more high-concept and is definitely not a low-budget film, which I generally write with myself in mind to direct. It’s an exciting film idea for me as it deals with a lot of ideas and themes that I like to work within, however it’s a challenge in that it’s more of a plot driven film, which will be good for me to work on. I’m looking forward to it… now I just have to avoid putting it off…

Love and Marriage

I’m getting married this summer. We’ve been pretty good about staying on top of things. Luckily Emily is a teacher and so she’s had her March break to catch us up on all of the things we’ve been slacking on. The hardest thing to do is “the list”. Who do you invite/exclude? Someone told us a long time ago to think about the people that you still think you’ll be in contact with in five years. That helped quite a bit, but then we still needed to trim after that. But it makes you think about the people that are in your lives now. And actually it kind of confirms what my feelings were on dating when I first started with Emily. I think you get to a certain point in your life where you want to figure stuff out and dating turns from just being fun and running around with different people, to kind of an interview. Are you worth spending the rest of my life with? And I think it’s not uncommon for people to start treating friendships like that. I know with me, and because I’m so busy, I have a small network of people that I’d call friends. I see them on a regular basis, and I enjoy their company. I don’t talk to them every day, but I know that they’ll be around for a long time. Several years ago that list of friends was a lot bigger. And I’m not sad that it’s smaller, because for me it’s better. Quality over quantity and that sort of thing. I got to do a nice long iChat with Mr. Zach Melnick, my best friend and old documentary partner, and frequent director-of-photography. He’s living in Sudbury until September continuing the documentary series that we started many many years ago. We’re going to hook up this weekend and I’ll finally show him all the beautiful work he did on Hoff. We’re also going to discuss a documentary project idea that we’ve been batting around for years now, that he has been putting together on his end more and more lately. We’re going to try and figure out how I can get involved. I miss working with him on a daily basis. I don’t want to say too much more about it other than that it’s connected to what I think was one of the biggest news stories in Ontario this year… perhaps Canada…

Alright. Time for sleep. Now that Emily is back to school tomorrow we’re starting our early morning swimming. I’ll get back to my blog again at the end of the month to update my film viewing list, including thoughts on the shorts I saw at WildSound.

Chip-Cheerio,
