Editing Heath Ledger's final movie has been tough for director Terry Gilliam - because he's reminded every day of what a great actor the tragic star was.
The Aussie was shooting Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus when he died from an accidental drug overdose last year - and now the British filmmaker has the tough task of piecing his great scenes together.
Gilliam says, "It's like I work with Heath every day. He's in fine shape, at least in the world I'm inhabiting at the moment.
"It just doesn't make sense. Every day goes by and I think, 'He'll be back in a second.'"
PAUL BLART TO WIN WEEKEND BOX OFFICE
Sony's Kevin James comedy 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop' opened to No. 1 at the Friday box office, grossing an estimated $9.9 million from 3,144 runs as the long Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend got underway.
It was another boom day for theater traffic. Twentieth Century Fox's rapper biopic "Notorious," from Fox Searchlight, opened to No. 2, grossing an estimated $8.3 million from only 1,638 runs. Lionsgate's horror title "My Bloody Valentine 3-D" wasn't far behind in its debut, grossing an estimated $8.1 million from 2,534 playdates.
"Valentine" is the widest 3-D release to date, playing in 1,033 3-D locations and 1,501 conventional theaters.
"Mall Cop" should come in No. 1 for the four-day weekend, thanks to its family friendly PG rating. "Notorious," the biopic of Biggie Smalls, and "Valentine" are both rated R.
Slotting fourth, Warner Bros. Clint Eastwood film 'Gran Torino' dipped 30% from last Friday with $6.2 million off 2,972 sites and a domestic cume of $57.2 million.
Paramount's moppet pic 'Hotel for Dogs' took fifth with $4.3 million off 3,271.
Par Vantage's 'Defiance' saw a tremendous surge in its Friday-to-Friday box office, earning $2.7 million in eighth, as the distrib expanded the Edward Zwick pic from 2 to 1,789 locations. Through its third Friday, the film which headlines Daniel Craig has generated $3 million.
Golden Globe best drama winner 'Slumdog Millionaire' saw a 44% uptick from last Friday without any increase in its theater count. The Fox Searchlight-Warner Bros. pic slotted tenth with $1.5 million from 582 raising its domestic cume to $38.3 million.
