Isao Takahata – Born in Japan in 1935, Takahata studied literature before being drawn to animation. His directorial debut, 1968’s Prince of the Sun, was a commercial failure which set back his career. Turning to television series, Takahata worked on material such as the Heidi and Anne of Green Gables stories, to popular reception. Isao returned to features, and found distribution and collaboration in the US, opening up North American animation to anime style.
