Born in Sweden in 1918, Ingmar (born Ernst) began writing in his twenties, and this saw his foray into film. Both a screenwriter as well as actor, he developed into a very prolific and celebrated director of films ranging from The Seventh Seal to Fanny and Alexander. His body of work often explored existential and bleak themes of the human condition, and his legacy is an enduring influence in modern cinema. Ingmar Bergman died in 2007.
