The captivation of horror movies...the murder and mayhem...the lawbreaking with no consequence. There could be many things that draw us towards this genre of creation. It could be our own deeply rooted psychological issues...maybe our hatred towards another...even good old fashioned fear. No matter what each personal reason is, it can never be debated that horror is the biggest sought after aspect of the movie industry. To make a top notch horror flick, the producers and directors need to invoke some form of paranoia within the audience...they need to make us cringe. We make our way into a movie theater to see blood and guts...to jump out of our seats...to run out the door screaming.
Take a look back at the Halloween craze...the original Carpenter film. He managed to scare us to death without even showing much. We let our imaginations run wild through the escalating levels of music...the faded screen shots...the suspense was overwhelming. The master of horror...he was amazing at filling our minds with a legitimate fear of Michael Myers. We were never given much background on how the character turned out the way he did...we didn't need any...all that mattered was he could kill everyone in his path.
Time to jump to modern day...the Halloween remake...puts a new spin on old time horror. Rob Zombie perfected what Carpenter started. In Zombie's version of Halloween, you got to see the transition of boy into monster. You were given the opportunity to sympathize with the little blonde kid...feel sorry for the life he was dealt...understand his mindset. He gave a sort of humanity to the character that we didn't know existed...he was real...much like ourselves.
That could be what draws us to this genre the most. It's just as simple as understanding...haven't we all been there. The perfect horror movie is one that shows something that could be real...it could be your next door neighbor...it could be you or me. You sit on the edge of your seats...close your eyes when the killer jumps on screen...go home afraid to fall asleep. No matter what everyone's fascination with horror movies is, it's something that will continue to grow. There is always someone out there getting ready to outdo the movie we just watched...it's escalating...in a society when violence is the norm. We read it in the papers...watch it on the news...pay to see it in the movies.
As for me...I love horror...there's nothing like it in the world. It can take me into a world full of imagination. ..possibilities.. .and fear. I can understand the plight of the killer...I can feel sorry for the victims...and I can imagine myself on both sides of what's going on. Horror is real, my friends...whether it be on the big screen or in real life...it's real and it's coming to get you...
