![]() HELLBOY II : THE GOLDEN ARMY The mythical world starts a rebellion against humanity in order to rule the Earth, so Hellboy and his team must save the world from the rebellious creatures. REVIEW: On the rebound from the brilliantly dark “Pan’s Labyrinth,” director Guillermo del Toro regresses from the high point in his career to perhaps his low point. I'm not saying that Hellboy II is a really bad film, it's just not as good as the previous film and del Toro's past movies. This film is already a winner even getting made as the original really didn't earn magic numbers at the box office. But it earned a cult following on the DVD market and people demanded a return. But don't be fooled by the hype machine as you'll be watching a Frankenstein's monster of a film. Meaning that everything you see in this movie has been done before. From the Star Wars esque And the irony is that these are all of the main character's arcs and inner conflicts. They are not Frankenstein and want to be seen as real unique and original people with heart and feelings. But the script just didn't give them that. Not enough for us to truly care about them and hope they get the credit they deserve for helping the humans and killing the dark people! Ron Perlman, playing the lead Hellboy, sure does have a lot of charm though. You can't help but liking him and root for him all the way. There is a terrific scene that sets up the final act of the film where him and the right hand man drink some beers, talk love and listen to Barry Manilou. It's shows the heart inside of these men. They are good people trying to do their best. All they want is for people to understand that. I just wish there was more scenes like that. Of course you need some action and a bad guy in this film, but we really want to get to know these characters a whole lot more. What makes them tick? If we know that then we like the action scenes and their conflicts a whole lot more. Bottom line is that Hellboy II is loaded with action, fun and entertainment. But that's all there is to it.This is a grade on the curve because on average it just doesn't cut it with the past films of this summer. WALL-E and IRON MAN set the precedent and Hellboy II just doesn't compare with them. 2 stars out of 4!center>
