Gus Van Sant - Born in Kentucky in 1952, Van Sant was intrigued by filmmaking from an early age, later studying design and working in advertising. His directorial debut, Mala Noche (1985), was an indie sensation which garnered studio attention, although they were wary of Van Sant’s sensibilities. 1989’s Drugstore Cowboy proved a critical success, and assuaged reservations regarding this fresh and forefront talent. To Die For (’95) solidified the industry’s regard for Gus, which he reinforced with Good Will Hunting’s 1998 Best Director nomination. Van Sant recently repeated this recognition with Milk in 2008.
