Gary Huggins Bio
Gary Huggins is an archivist and programmer of genre cinema. On the strength of his first short, FIRST DATE, Gary Huggins has been named one of Filmmaker Magazine's "25 New Faces of Indie Film 2006". FIRST DATE premiered at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and was one of five U.S. narratives invited to France's prestigious Clermont-Ferrand Festival International du Court Metrage. It has since been selected for festivals worldwide. "FIRST DATE was cast entirely with non-actors I met during the ten years I worked at an inner-city public library, where every day was a secret casting call: amazing people on weird trajectories would approach the desk, deliver a monologue and go away. I wanted a film that would open a glimpse onto their world, something tightly scripted but loose enough to employ their real lives and personalities. First Date's lead, Santiago Vasquez, is by day a police officer with a background in undercover work, and the film's primary inspiration; he can go from weirdly funny to threateningly real in an instant, the same tonal shift I wanted throughout FIRST DATE."
