FILM EDITING COMBINATIONS - There are five basic methods of film editing. For over 90 years, film editing was done by cutting and splicing the film by hand on a Steinbeck machine. Now of course, in the digital age, we edit on the computer. But you can still splice and edit your film the way they did in the old days (up to the early 90's) if you can find a Steinbeck machine which is almost impossible now.

#1-SHOOT ON FILM, EDIT ON FILM, MASTER ON FILM
a) Production
b) The negative is processed
c) The negative is sorted to select circled takes
d) Circled takes are printed and they negative is stored
e) WORKPRINT is synced with audio and screened/logged
f) Workprint is edited/approved/Negative pull list
g) Negative is cut
h) Color timing and printing into answer print, printing elements, release print

#2-SHOOT ON FILM, EDIT ON DIGITAL, MASTER ON FILM
a) Production
b) The negative is sorted to select circled takes
c) Circled takes (or all takes) are transferred to tape
d) Off-Line editing
e) Edit decision list
f) Negative pull list
g) Negative cutting
h) Color timing/printing lab/printing elements/release prints

#3-SHOOT ON FILM, EDIT ON DIGITAL, MASTER ON DIGITAL
a) Production
b) The negative is processed
c) The negative is sorted to selct circled takes
d) Circled takes (or all takes) are transferred to tape
e) Off-Line editing
f) Edit decision list
g) On-Line editing with color correction

#4-SHOOT ON FILM, EDIT ON FILM, MASTER ON DIGITAL
a) Production
b) The negative is processed
c) The negative is sorted to select circled takes
d) Circled takes (or all takes) are printed. Negative stored
e) Workprint is synced with audio and logged
f) Workprint is edited/approved/negative pull list
g) Negative is cut
h) Transfer to digital
i) On-line edit with color correction and full edit assembly
j) Video master



#5-SHOOT OF DIGITAL, EDIT ON DIGITAL, MASTER ON DIGITAL
a) Production
b) Digitize masters into non-linear edit system
c) Off-line editing and edit decision list
d) On-line editing with color correction

When editing your film, the process will fall into one of these combinations.
