PODCAST interview with Filip on May 7 2009
11 Questions with FILIP TERLECKI. A WILDsound WINTER 2009 TV Screenplay Finalist

1. What is your screenplay about?

Liz Lemon goes undercover as a Wall Street escort to save her boss Jack Donaghy from ruin. Tracy Jordan starts up his own religion to beat the IRS.

2. Why did you decide to write this screenplay?

This spec was written as part of my Banff TV Festival ‘Global Writers Apprentice Program’ application. Plus 30 Rock is just awesome – the writing is superb and the characters and storylines really stick with you. It’s a series that will go down in TV history as one of the greatest.

3. How long have you been writing screenplays?

8 years

4. What is your favorite TV show of all-time?

TV just keeps on getting better and better so that’s a hard question to answer. Some of my favourite series are: Lost, Damages, Arrested Development, Entourage and of course 30 Rock!I also love Law & Order: Special Victims Unit – my favourite part is the opening monologue – it’s brilliant because it sums up the series in a single paragraph right off the bat.

5. What artist in the industry would you love to work with?

Tina Fey of course and the Godfather of Movies – Francis Ford Coppola

6. Who was your hero growing up?

(In order of memory recollect) Superman, Bruce Lee, The Fraggles (from Fraggle Rock), Sylvester Stallone, Chuck Norris, and Ferris Bueller. Oh, and Eddie Murphy in his Beverly Hills Cop days.

7. Ideally, where would you like to be in 5 years?

In the Writer’s Room of a hit TV show OR shaking hands with Steven Spielberg saying “yes, Mr. Spielberg! Writing those 5 scripts will be nooooo problem.”

8. Describe your process; do you have a set routine, method for writing?

Wake up at 4:55am stumble out of bed, crawl to the office and start writing. I write until 7am, then hop in the shower (hoping not to fall asleep) and think about all the stuff I’ve just written – if it all sucks I cry about it for a bit (recall shower scene from Ace Ventura Pet Detective). Then I think/write on the subway to and from work and sometimes during lunch. I write a bit more after work, eventually crash in bed and wake up and do the same thing over again.

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

Music. There is some amazing stuff coming out of Canada – Mstrkrft, Metric, Feist, Tokyo Police Club, Crystal Castles. I also enjoy traveling. I love hanging out in vibrant cities and getting creative fuel for my writing.

10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Script Contest?

Simple – it’s really the best contest out there. You get great script coverage and if you’re lucky enough to be crowned the winner, a fantastic atmosphere in which you can hear your words come to life.

11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Hmmm, the entire showbiz industry can be extremely frustrating – for writers especially. It’s a bit of a love/hate relationship – sort of like chasing after that dream girl that keeps on treating you like shit. I would just say – stick it out– she might eventually come around.
