FAST YEAR

FAST YEAR
by Vanessa Ruane

ALSO ON SITE

The year has flown by. I can’t believe the holidays are already upon us and the close of anther year. This year of freelance has taken me through so many different jobs and experiences.

I was able to finish a documentary and get it screened at two festivals, write a feature script, direct a short film, shoot and edit weddings and work as a camera operator and production coordinator. All in all that’s a good amount of work.

I have another new to add. I just got hired by Apple. I have been trying to figure out a full time – part time job for some consistency and at my Pro Care class, or as how I like to call it – Mac College, my teacher mentioned I’d be great working there. Really, are they hiring, I asked. All the time, she said. So I went home that Tuesday got online and applied. By Thursday I got a call from the Glendale Galleria store – Sunday an interview and a week later I am hired as a Mac Specialist and can train to be a Mac Genius or Creative. I’m quite excited by it and they offer benefits, stock options and 401K plans. The scheduling is very similar to waiting tables where you can switch shifts if a freelance day as an operator pops up. We’ll see how it goes but getting paid to learn to me feels like a win - win.

I’ve been feeling much better as I clean the wedding edits off my plate. The editing takes a long time but with the help of my weekly mac private classes I’ve been learning so much to get faster.

People say the seasons don’t change in LA, but they do. The longer hours of darkness have started. I love to be awake in the darkness of the morning and watch the sunrise. It’s the time of possibilities and it feels so magical. This is the time of year where I witness that regularly. I love it. I love making soups and feeling the chill in the air, and yes we do have low temperatures here in Sunny LA they just happen when the sun goes down. It’s a great time for hikes and bike rides – brisk but not too cold. It’s a time for reflection and plans for the next year. I look forward to the holidays and time with family, it truly is the best time of year.
