Elia Kazan: Born in Turkey in 1909, his family immigrated to America where Kazan studied drama. Despite winning three Tony Awards in his early career, Kazan’s true calling was directing. This background did provide a keen insight for intense stories like A Streetcar Named Desire and On the Waterfront. A proponent of Method Acting, he co-founded The Actors Studio, and guided 21 Oscar-nominated performances. Elia himself won two Best Director Oscars. He is also known for his controversial involvement with the industry’s infamous “black-listing” of the 1950s. Elia Kazan died in 2003.
