It's a comic book movie, yes, which usually equals box office gold. But this is a comic book movie that most people don't know. Well at least on the Western side of the world. But big deal, a good film will travel to the depths of the world. Unfortunately this isn't a film that will be watched by many people because it's.....well....it's a film that really shouldn't be watched. When I first stated watching this film I couldn't help but think of Transformers. It's basically the same setup. Boy receives an artifact that he brushes off because he's more worried about attempting to obtain the girl he can't obtain. Then a serious of events happens in a matter of minutes and he's on a journey to SAVE THE WORLD. From dorky high school kid to the ultimate hero in a span of minutes. And star Justin Chatwin is a decent actor, but he looks an awful like Shia LaBeouf and he seems to be attempting to be doing a Shia impersonation in Dragonball: Evolution. A quirk here and a goofy smile there, just like LaBeouf in Transformers. I know Chatwin is really in the hands of the director for this type of film, so you can't blame him and you end up feeling sorry for him throughout the entire movie. The question I do have is WHY are they attempting this? Why can't they just go ahead and make their own original film. There's no way they can compete with Transformers appeal, production and marketing budgets, so they might as well take as many chances as possible. Swing for the fences when you are the underdog. What else do you have to lose? Why be a poor man's anything in life? Be your own film. This is just one of those films to explain to early filmmakers. Do everything the opposite of Dragonball: Evolution. There isn't a minute in this film that isn't a cliche. So it's almost like watching all of your old favorite hero's journey's films all at the same time. Star Wars, The Wizard of Oz, The Lord of the Ring, you name it, they steal from everyone. Don't do it. Don't watch this film. It's at least I can do for the world's population. I see it so you don't have to. CLICK HERE and read some Classic Movie Reviews!
