11 Questions with DORIS B GILL. A WILDsound SPRING 2009 Feature Screenplay Finalist

1. What is your screenplay about?

In an idyllic kingdom, where people are born old and become young, a child-like creature, STAR, is stolen by a society of have-nots. REMBRANDT JACQUES, a dashing wanderer, must rescue Star and unite the two kingdoms for POPPY, Star's beautiful guardian.

2. Why did you decide to write this screenplay?

Somehow, I imagined a huge, exotic bud in the forest and built the story around that.

3. How long have you been writing screenplays?

Since 2000, when I wrote a 5 minute Tall Tale at Toastmasters. Everyone loved it and that inspired me to turn it into a sci'fi screenplay. It won a Platinum Remi Award at the Houston International Film Festival.

4. What film have you seen the most in your lifetime?

That's a hard one! I'm a big fan of Preston Sturgis, Billy Wilder and Neil Simon. Although I've watched "Out of Africa" many times because it's so layered and rich. The other one is The "Illusionist" because it keeps one on the edge of the seat without foul language or blasting light and sound. It's a wonderful story with a surprising, unpredictable ending. What more could you ask from a movie?

5. What artist in the industry would you love to work with?

Ed Norton

6. Who was your hero growing up?

Tarzan

7. Ideally, where would you like to be in 5 years?

Physically, right where I am. But with at least four of my scripts made into good movies.

8. Describe your process; do you have a set routine, method for writing?

Sometimes I write for an hour before I go swimming or walking ( where ideas usually pop to the surface). Then, write for three or four hours in the afternoon. If I'm rewriting, which I do most of the time, I do that anytime. To me, writing is like rushing to a rendezvous to meet a secret lover! Can't wait to get to the computer!

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

I'm lucky to have a very special man in my life. And I'm very interested in politics and Astrology, funny combination.

10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Script Contest?

My sister, Trish Sugerek, a published Playwright, told me of WILDsound.

11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

I try to enter only contests that give feedback. My friends also contribute to critiques. It's great to send a pdf file. What a greatest invention! I don't do everything someone suggests but I do pick up a lot of food for thought and sometimes inspiration. I really believe that writing is rewriting.
