Cybel Martin talks about Applying for Jobs
I applied for two “off topic” jobs this week. One was to be a DP at the Sundance Labs. I got an email through a friend of a friend and always thought that that would be an incredible opportunity. A perfect way to meet new “ready to break big” directors. Needless to say, I sent in my resume etc and never got a call back. I had a thought to call some other friends and see who could put in a good word, but the truth is…it’s not really how I want to spend my summer. I’d rather be shooting features, commercials or an interesting doc. The other “off topic” job I applied for was as an instructor at the New York Film Academy teaching in France. I speak (used to) French fluently after living there for over a year and I have taught Cinematography a number of times over the years. NYFA has a thing for hiring NYU Grad alums so I thought I’d at least get a call. No call. Again, I can’t say I am disappointed. Not how I want to spend my summer. However, I am a restless one and love love love constant opportunities to work, be creative, doing something. I did get an email about a shoot in Arizona. I had just watched “The Proposition” and wished hard to have a shoot in the desert. Fingers crossed. I finished the painting for that film and love it. I am really proud of it and hope it makes the director happy. The producer came by today to pick it up and I was relieved. I was anticipating a overly enthusiastic but clueless klutz of a PA handling the art. It’s a small detail (actually huge) but it made me feel respected. Besides that, the week has been relatively quiet. I went to a really well organized and crafted party at the Tribeca Film Festival. Open bar. Lots of food. And what I love most about this festival: a relaxed atmosphere. Later in the week, I ran into a dear friend who is an actor on General Hospital. I was coming home from a really pathetic dating situation and was so glad that I live in NYC, where running into a good friend on the street is normal. Phew. He put me in a much better mood. With the exception of mindless days in college, I have never been much of a soap fan. However, my friend is on my reel from a film we did together eons ago (it stays on my reel because I still get more work from that clip than almost anything else I have ever shot) and it cracks me up when people see the clip and their face lights up. I know they watch soaps. Recent Netflix: “The Painted Veil”. It was impeccable. In every way. That final scene set to “A La Claire Fontaine” had me in tears. Wow. I also re-watched my copies of “Heat” and “Apocalypse Now” and remembered why I am a DP.
