Cybel Martin on What I Think and What I Know

For starters, I think that what I think and know should have no bearing on your life unless you chose it to. As I gather new knowledge and new experiences, what I think and know changes. Far be it for me to hold anyone to this if I change my opinion tomorrow.

I do believe we create our own worlds. It’s all about choices. I called my DP site Magic Eye Film, because I really do see magic in the every day and I certainly strive to recreate that magic in every film that I shoot. You could say I choose to see magic, and it never disappoints. I had a supernatural/unexplainable experience when I was child and vowed then to never question others’ beliefs: ghosts, goblins, leprechauns, UFOs. I won’t necessarily believe in them myself but I certainly will never say they don’t exist.

I think Geminis are the smartest sign in the Zodiac and that Prince was born on the best day of the year.

I know my friends are my family and my parents are my friends. If I could collect dollars like I collect friends, I’d be hanging out with Bill Gates right now.

Speaking of which, Richard Branson is my current idol. I love both him and Oprah for their outrageousness, success and commitment to “giving back.” I know that volunteering makes me a better person.

I think that film as a medium will never die. I hope the world will find a way for film and video to co-exist, much like painting and photography.

I think a number of film directors and producers live in a perpetual state of fear that they really don’t belong in the seat of power. And this fear of being found out leads them to write scripts, hire crew not based on originality or passion but based on an anticipation of failure.

I think every morning you decide who you are going to be and usually you chose the person of yesterday based out of fear. I am always fascinated by identity, a thought that commenced with reading a book on Buddhism. Perhaps its not always based on fear. Friends and family like to insist on who you are, as in “you are always this” or “you are always that”. I think both the positive and negative aspects people see in me are also a reflection of how they view themselves. I have a new saying that I love, “what people think of me is none of my business”.

I know relying on the Los Angeles bus system is a humbling experience. I know taking the M1 bus in Manhattan and riding alongside Central Park in the spring is a magnificent ride. I think Holland’s gift of Daffodils is one of the simplest most healing gestures.

I think when someone says “I’m not good at sales”, they are not exactly correct. That statement implies that they can not sell something when in truth, we are all always selling. How you dress is a form of selling. What image are you selling? Starving artist to get some extra cash out of your Great Aunt? Talking on your cell phone to sell yourself as busy or popular?

Everyone who writes a blog is selling. I’m selling the image of Oscar Winner and Philanthropist. One day someone (the Academy for starters) is going to bite and you’ll remember this post.
