Come dance with me
Let’s act like grown-ups at
weddings and family celebrations
Let’s dance on the feet of moms and dads,
uncles and aunts
Let our little legs
go side to side
as we hold hands and balance
with the smiling adult
looking down at us
Let’s dance
our way
hopping
skipping
twirling
and spinning around
arms extended
giggling and looking at the ceiling
going faster and faster till dizzy
silly laughing
and spinning
falling down breathless
rolling
and giggling and giggling
and giggling to each other
till we jump up
running to find music
of our own making
and a new dance
for our energy and imagination

meet me on the dance floor
push through to our spot
the empty space left for us
Let’s prance practiced steps
footwork of the latest moves
swinging arms
rolling shoulders
knees bending deeply
snapping fingers
clapping hands
stomping feet
rocking hips
twisting frames
and glancing touches
daring brushes
and smiling side glances
flirtations suggesting chances
of closer encounters
Come dance with me
Come salsa
meringue
cha cha
pachanga
charanga
quajira
mambo
To blaring horns
Beating drums
Picante piano
Flying flutes
And crowd-blown whistles
Chant with the band leader
when he shouts “Ayuda!”
Meet me on the beat of the clave
showing off the stuff we do
Come twirl under my arms
circling through and around me
spin and laugh
become heady on the music
our intertwined syncopation
moving like one
with the intricacies of two
Let eyes fall on our joy
join in without shame
up the ante on our antics
and lay a challenge
“Hey, top this!”

bump
shingaling
rock
ska
reggae
jump up
in sweaty crowds
following carnival bands
and shout
"Hey, hey, hey"
Come dance with me
come hold my hand
and rest your head on my shoulder
wrap our arms round each other
sliding smoothly
through easy music
Softly sing
words of love
feel the comfort
of our closeness
inhale a new perfume that rises
from the warmth of us
in the midst of aromas
the smell of dance
Lean your last energies against me
sighing at the fullness of our contentment
glance into each other’s eyes
complete our closeness with a smile and gentle kiss
our thanks for another treasured memory.

Remember a lifetime of music
rhythms of our seasons
reasons for our revelries
reveries of dances with
names that fit the fashions
stirred our passions
to a symphony of movement
from those moments
when we spun like children
twirled like young lovers
pranced in line like soldiers on parade
broke loose free-style
through crowds of cheering party people
in clubs
ball rooms
rented halls
finished basements
music concerts
picnic grounds
seaside beaches
public parks
private pools
our own living room
and sometimes
on city streets
just because
Remember and rest
in the comfort of arms
warm and safe
move to the rhythms of heartbeats
soft and familiar
melt into eternal moments
where all else is absent
from the fullness of our circle
the circle of our tiny universe
the universe of our enduring love
