farmed out to work pulling meager wages with
death & sickness the reward

in 19OO 15 was responsible for house and home
could mean married to a man of wealth, with child

in 19OO 15 meant a third of life was already gone
blackened lungs and crushed limbs
the legacy of any fragile butterfly
with wings shorn in the machinery

in 19OO 15 meant a child living an adult's pain
sprung fully, though not fully developed,
into an adult's world of shadow and ticking hours
entering factory gates each day like a return to the womb
