Hi everyone. I’m excited to share all the up’s and down’s of indie film production with you for two reasons: 1. you can learn from my mistakes and victories; 2. I can vent with someone other than my husband (he thanks you in advance)!
Catherine Rubey and her history
I’ve written a drama/romance feature, Baggage, attached a few actors, producers, a PHENOMINAL composer, and I have raised some money via a grass-roots private equity offering open to qualified investors. We’re halfway to our minimum needed to move into pre-production for lensing this summer/fall in Chicago. However, any other key cast and crew attachments are going to want an idea of budget/location/start date etc. before they sign on, and I NEED a lead actor or director that will incite further investment from…....well, somewhere. Thus a bit of a chicken and an egg situation.
Since we’ve chosen to use a Private Placement Memorandum as our fundraising framework, we’re prohibited from soliciting investors. So we have to use our network of friends, family, colleagues, etc. to introduce us to anyone new. This may have been our first mistake because it is so prohibitive from a sales standpoint. There will be plenty of time for second-guessing but right now we need to focus on attaching: a. actors; b. money. I’m networking like crazy trying to drum up some new investors.
Catherine Rubey and financing
That’s where we are today. We have until April 1st to complete financing and if we don’t we have to re-organize and go to a plan B…which is being formulated and may include a little trip up to Canada with some friends.
I’ve been talking with an actor this last week, as well as an agent at a boutique agency and a mini-major production company. I’ve added some additional layers to the script and the producers and I feel really good about the story we’re telling. If you haven’t done so yet, check out our website at www.baggagethefilm.com for info about the project.
Next up: I’ll introduce my producers, I have a producers’ meeting tomorrow and I’ll report on that, and more tales from the grind. See you in the funny papers!
