REVIEW: It’s time for the charity auction again…and last year’s auction was a source of some pretty good laughs. Last year, Buster accidentally bid on Lucille 2 when he thought it was his mother standing on stage. Michael decided to bid on his sister Lindsay after nobody else would. Flash forward a year later. None of the characters have seemed to have any sort of personal growth since then, so I’m assuming this charity auction will turn out just like the other. Both Lucille and Lucille 2 need someone to bid on them. After asking pretty much everyone else, Lucille goes to her last resort – Gob. She reaches Gob at a point where he’s too depressed to think about anything, so he agrees to bid on her at the charity auction. I love how Lucille is not concerned about the charity or raising money for a good cause…she just wants to look good in front of everyone by having someone bid on her. But the thing is -- I’m not so sure how good it looks to have your son bid on you at a charity auction.
Michael runs into his childhood crush, Sally Sitwell. She is the daughter of Stan Sitwell, the long-time rival to George Bluth. Competition between the two fathers made it difficult for Michael and Sally to date in the past…and things haven’t changed. I like the flashbacks we are provided with that show George and Stan from a long time ago arguing over whether or not a teenage-aged Michael will “stick it to” Sally. Even as an adult, Michael is incredibly awkward around Sally. And unfortunately for him, she never seems to find him at a good time. Every time he runs into Sally, his credit card is being declined, he’s working at the banana stand, or even suffering from smoke inhalation. Things keep going worse for him…but he decides the best way to win her over is to bid for her at the auction. Sally Sitwell is played by Christine Taylor, wife of comedy actor Ben Stiller. Some may recognize her from movies like “Dodgeball”, “The Wedding Singer”, “The Brady Bunch Movie”, and the 90s television show “Hey Dude!” She’s cute in this role of Sally Sitwell and I hope we see more of her in future episodes (although I doubt we do). Lindsay, Tobias, and Gob bring some good laughs in this episode. Lindsay finds a date with Moses Taylor, the star of the cheesy cop television show “Wrench.” They meet at a pro-gun rally (another cause Lindsay fights for that she probably doesn’t really understand). This causes Tobias to want to become more of a man for his wife…and he drops the Blue Man Group dream.
In the previous episode, Gob sleeps with Lucille 2 in hopes to help the company but only makes things worse. In this episode, he deals with his feelings for Lucille 2. He doesn’t want to have feelings for her, but can’t help it since he likes the affection he receives from this relationship. He tells Lucille 2 he loves to be around her, but just doesn’t want to be seen with her. I’d assume that’s everything a girl likes to hear, right? The episode ends at the charity auction. Tobias decides to bid on Lindsay, who once again is making a fool of herself on stage since she has just been shot with a horse tranquilizer. Tobias does this to be a hero for his wife and to right his wrong, but she passes out before even noticing who has bid on her. Michael bids on Sally Sitwell after getting approval from her father, but she says no to a date with him because she wants to date someone her father doesn’t approve of. This is exactly like Michael, who has thrived on the fact that George doesn’t want him to be with Sally all throughout the episode. And once again, Lucille ends up disappointed at the charity auction. Like I said, last year Buster accidentally bid on Lucille 2 with Lucille’s $10,000. But this year, Gob does it on purpose and bids on Lucille 2 instead of his mother. The best part is the fact that he raises the bid from $800 to $10,000 – and it’s all just to build a new golf course. Oh, and did I mention the Bluths aren’t even club members? Precious.
BURNING LOVE
