REVIEW: A good family runs on trust. This must be why the Bluth family has never claimed to be a good one. I find it hilarious how every time one of them wants to hang out with the other, the worst is immediately assumed. It happens often throughout this episode in particular. Gob is struggling to find acceptance…from anyone. He just wants a friend. In this episode, he reaches the point where he so badly wants companionship he goes to Lucille looking for it. She immediately assumes that he is onto something and wants her out of the house. She asks her private eye, Gene Parmesan, to follow her son around. This is usually what happens to Gob in this family. They all pretty much treat him like garbage and think he’s up to something stupid. In their defense, that’s not an implausible assumption to have…I just find myself feeling for Gob in this episode. Weird, I know.
The character of Ann is now played by Mae Whitman, who some may remember as the little girl from movies such as “Hope Floats” or “Independence Day.” I’m really not sure what the exact reasons were for the replacement of Alessandra Torresani, the original actress who played Ann. I feel Torresani does a better job at capturing a duller and boring girl than Whitman does. I actually don’t find Whitman to be that unattractive. She’s definitely no supermodel, but I don’t find her to be as bland as her character is suggested to be.
I mostly enjoy Buster’s scenes in this episode. As we all know, he’s joining the Army to spite his mother, while she’s going along with it to spite him. Such a healthy relationship, don’t you think? Well, when he hears that Michael is traveling to Mexico, he sees this as an opportunity to flee the country and escape enlistment. Little does he know that Michael is actually giving Lupe, the housekeeper, a ride home first. After Buster falls asleep in the trunk, he doesn’t realize the car has only been driving for six minutes. He believes he has arrived in Mexico and climbs out of the trunk. He is taken in by Lupe’s family (which in reality only lives six miles from Buster’s home). It’s hilarious watching him interact with Lupe’s family members, actually believing he is really in Mexico. I like the silly parts with Gene Parmesan. To prove he is a talented private eye, he always disguises himself and pops out to surprise the Bluths. Lucille finds this very entertaining…and so do I. As always, Ron Howard does a tremendous job as the narrator. I just love his small little jabs at people in between dialogue. For example in this episode, Lucille says, “Isn’t he the best?” when she refers to Gene Parmesan. Ron Howard’s narration quickly retorts back with a, “He is far from the best.” I just like an outside source of opinion since the family is always so dense with everything. It’s nice having the narrator speak our thoughts as we watch the show.
