REVIEW: It’s Christmas time once again for the Bluth family. Last year they ruined the town’s annual pageant…what will they get into this year? Many families have a holiday tradition…sitting around telling stories, opening presents, large family gatherings, or possibly even skiing. The tradition in the Bluth family is simple…rebuilding the banana stand. Every year it seems dumping the banana stand into the bay is the cool thing to do for the local kids. So every year, the Bluths rebuild the stand. This year is no different and Michael sees this as a nice project for him and George Michael to attempt. But Michael has some new competition – George Michael’s girlfriend Ann. Michael is not a fan of Ann, often getting her name wrong. Meanwhile, Maeby seems to want more attention from Lindsay. This is weird to me since this is the first time I’ve seen Maeby actually want her mother to spend time with her. Michael and Maeby bond over the fact that two important people to them won’t give them the time of day. George Michael is too busy praying (very creepily I might add) with Ann’s family while Lindsay is too busy trying to find a date. Towards the end of the episode, the tables turn and George Michael and Lindsay realize how close Michael and Maeby have become. The two of them now try to bond to make Michael and Maeby jealous of them as well. I tell you what, if this family would just learn to talk things out they would actually get something accomplished. This storyline does lead to some good laughing moments when they decide to get the karaoke machine out at the company’s Christmas party. Michael and Maeby, in order to prove their bond, decide to sing a duet – “Afternoon Delight.” After a verse or so, Michael realizes how inappropriate it is to be singing this song with his niece. Later on, George Michael and Lindsay sing the song together to the same awkward response from people watching. I’m a big fan of Gob but I find him to be a little on the annoying side for most of this episode. He is considered the president of the company (only by name, not by responsibility). He has started wearing expensive suits to work and taunts his co-workers for how bad they look compared to him. The joke is solid for the first time or two that he does this…but it runs dry after a while. I do enjoy the karma that strikes him later on, though, when Michael and Maeby stick a bunch of candy to the back of his suit without him realizing it. The Army really is not working out for Buster, but that is the last thing he wants Lucille to find out. He wants to prove to her that he is strong enough to be on his own…and I think it’s about time. But, of course, his inner-child creeps out when an arcade game distracts him from catching the bus to his first day of boot camp. What he learns from this claw machine comes in handy for events to come in this episode.
Michael believes the only way to calm down his mother is a little romance and “afternoon delight” from Oscar. But Oscar misunderstands Michael and assumes that Lucille is in need of a marijuana fix. He says a great line, “I need to figure out which way I want to put it in her. Maybe I’ll put it in her brownie.” Michael is obviously disgusted by this because he thinks Oscar is referring to something else. The only really big knee-slapping and roll on the ground laughing moment is the ending to the episode. Once again, all storylines meet at one place and some epic finish takes place. It all starts with the company Christmas party being held outside the frozen banana stand. Gob comes wearing a banana suit…which is funny considering he has spent the entire episode judging everyone else for their own suits. Lucille, now stoned and craving a frozen banana, drives right through the party and hits Tobias with her car. This is the second time Tobias has been hit by a car…this season…so far. When her car finally comes to a stop, Gob is caught in the banana stand and Buster sees a perfect opportunity to become a hero for his older brother. Claw machine! Conveniently, there is a crane nearby and Buster picks Gob up just like he would with the claw machine’s stuffed animals. But unfortunately for Gob, Buster has yet to master the art of release and he drops him in the bay. Here is something else that catches my attention throughout this episode. Who are these Bluth company employees? Why on this green earth have they stayed with the company through all of these legal issues and absolute ineptitude of its management? They must be getting paid a lot.
