Basically, it's about self destruction. The characters are all destroying themselves whether it's on purpose or not. On the larger scale it could be taken metaphorically for what we as a species do to ourselves. It's also about what people will do to save themselves when things look most bleak... all with a bit of humour of course.
2. Why did you decide to write this screenplay?
I actually decided to write this screenplay when a friend told me that the Nicholl's Fellowship Screenplay contest deadline was twenty days away (last year's contest). I had those days free so I whipped up a first draft in about fifteen days and then did another quick pass and sent it in. It did surprisingly well coming in the top 350 out of 5,000. So I figured it at least merited a second draft.
3. How long have you been writing screenplays?
I've been writing for about 10 years now. Lots of shorts, a few plays, and one feature. This one.
4. What is you all-time favorite film? (name only one)
I hate to admit it but it's 'A Clockwork Orange' by you know who.
5. What artist in the film industry would you love to work with?
It's artists and it's the Cohen Brothers.
6. How many screenplays have you written?
I've written about a dozen shorts, but this is my first feature length. Although I have a few other outlines.
7. Ideally, where would you like to be in 5 years?
In 5 years I'd like to be doing the writing/directing thing in both film and TV. Doesn't everyone?
8. Describe your process; do you have a set routine, method for writing?
My process is... well, stare at the wall, the screen, type, delete a word here and there. Scratch my... head and then go to a coffee shop and do it all again. I do like writing while out and about. I find the action and the people around stimulating. Kinda like 'what's that dude's story?'. Once I have an idea I think my method's pretty traditional in that I like to outline the plot lines and characters before doing a first draft. It keeps me from getting lost while in the middle of it. I like to read writing books while I'm writing as well. Something about it gets my creative juice going and I always learn a new technique for getting better. One thing I always try to do is ask a lot of questions to myself and the character to find the most 'out of the box' choice possible and then not to judge it right away. I also write a lot while staring into the blackness above me while I try to sleep. Something about (I smell a cliche coming) the blank canvas above me for my characters to move and play.
9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?
I'm passionate about life, my wife, my son to be, nature, the planet, traveling, playing music, exercise, movies, theatre, books, animals, food, and long walks on the beach.
10. What influenced you to enter the WILDsound Script Contest?
I entered it cause I could get feedback on my script from people that don't know me and so I thought that maybe they'd be brutally honest. And then I could do another rewrite to make it stronger.
11. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?
Just keep doing it. Don't get discouraged. We all often write crap, so just don't show it to anyone.
