You can call it nepotism, partiality or what you will but I would like to present my husband Dwight McFee with the Actor of the Year Award.
Having a trained voice, benefit of 4 years of the Honours Acting Program at University of Alberta and nearly a hundred plays and a hundred film and TV shows to his credit, my darling husband gave a smashing performance at Chapters for the Brian Mulroney book signing. He told me he was going to heckle the Brian and I was a little trepidatious, as befits the wife of an actor activist with ‘balls’ – I could only imagine, and so I insisted on being there, since with the loss of his best friend Keith Knight to the hateful big C, he is now working alone.
We assembled with the crowd and I asked Dwight why he chose to stand upstairs and not where the interview would take place..he pointed to the door behind us..point taken and then pointed out the CSIS suits and the Undercover Security which is why we needed the door. We were there to make the point but not disrupt the meeting otherwise we’d be in jail.
The moment came, the former PM walked into the crowd like Great Caesar at the Forum, arms raised triumphantly, and in his best actor voice Dwight’s “BOOO!” rang out and filled the entire Chapters in the Manu Life Center. Sorry Heather, it may not have been the way you envisioned it, but if the polite Canadian citizens still insist on embracing insipid politesse instead of healthy dissent, so be it.
A fellow next to us, quietly remarked, “shame”, perhaps he was originally from South Africa, where I noticed people have the habit of responding to things with either a “shame” or “pleasure”. Dwight replied “shame on you for supporting this man” and continued his “booing” as opposed to ‘boohoohooing’ until three little fellows made it up the stairway to us, and insisted that we leave immediately. Very nicely Dwight asked if dissent was not allowed in our country…”this is private property” they replied..ah yes, of course..but hey we’re not Americans who have the right to property in their Constitution, we’re Canucks and we believe in airing our concerns to the powers that be or not.
We left quietly, Dwight to an audition and I do my Monday night acting group.
I was VERY PROUD of my husband. He delivered a magnificent performance!
Here he speaks for himself to CTV Talkback which posed the question: Do you hate or love Mulroney.
Dwight McFee to Talkback: It's not a matter of 'hating' Mr. Mulroney, but holding His Hubris accountable for his policies, actions and what some Canadians would consider betrayal; as Mr. Mulroney and a large sector of the financial, political and media elite continue the revisionist rehabilitation of the former Prime Minister of the United States of North America.
What should the Presidential Prime Minister be held accountable for? A few examples:
- The recent canard that Pierre Trudeau left the biggest deficit in the history of the nation. The media, if they were at all interested, with a simple investigation, would find that accounting for inflation, proportionally a much larger debt was incurred at the end of the Second World War, and after the depression. Mr. Trudeau faced two oil shocks, a recession and the end of the Vietnam War. If that's too onerous for the news reader, a simple statement that Mr. Mulroney and Mr. Mazinkowski increased the debt to the nation by at least five times in the Golden Eighties, which was followed, after his cowardly exit, by threats from the IMF, the World Bank and 'Wall Street' of adjustment programs unless we shaped up.
- The day Mr. Mulroney exited the sinking ship, The Benevolent One ordered that SEVENTY BILLION Canadian dollars of inherited wealth could move offshore without being taxed for the next twenty years. I noticed at the Reisman Regalia event last night, many grateful old family scions in the audience.
-In 1987 Flora MacDonald, Minister of Culture at the time, was to introduce legislation making fifteen percent of the cinema screens available to Canadian product, similar to the CanCon regulations for radio. Mr. Jack Valente the powerful President of the AMPPA came screaming into Ms. MacDonald’s office and then to the Prime Minister's, telling the PM that if he wanted a free trade deal forgetaboutit! Next day that was dead.
-The American negotiator for the Free Trade agreement has stated that the American's couldn't understand why Canada kept offering so much they didn't ask for but of course would accept. It would still have to be American 'law' though, but we'll take it. Big Shot Brian immediately went into pre-emptive surrender.
- Where's the $300,000. Schreiber dollars? As well, the air bus scandal has not been completely resolved, only that the RCMP screwed up, but the money trail goes somewhere?
- These are only a few events that need to be remembered, but the last and best from Mr. Democracy is the lying in the elections. More than sixty percent of Canadians voted against the Free Trade agreement. But the Bully from Bay Comeau barged on with what really was a financial services agreement, in the face of world opposition to bi-lateral trade agreements (an international round was underway), to please his latest Colonel McCormick, Ronny 'the ripper' Regan.
I was the heckler at the Reisman Revisionist Revival last night. Of course I was ushered out swiftly, it was a private event. I made no fuss as I had made my point. I don't normally do that kind of action.
However Mr. Mulroney, through the collusion of yourself and the rest of the mainstream media do a disservice to our country by not holding this man accountable, forcing citizens' such as myself to disprove the received wisdom of this courtier's malfeasance. He is not 'king of the hill, top of the heap'. The public record documents that. Part of your mandate, irrespective of ownership, is to speak truth to power. If this principle is not aspired to, then unfortunately your organization only contributes to the intricate bestiality of a man and system such as Brian Mulroney and his backer's.
