The sixth and final season of "A Different World" started with flashbacks to Whitley and Dwayne's honeymoon in L.A. This was during the time of the riots there in 1992, following the Rodney King verdict, when the police officers accused of beating him, and shown on videotape committing the crime, were found not guilty. As a result, the city of Los Angeles exposed in violence. Dwayne and Whitley were caught right in the middle of it. At one point, he was arrested, and falsely accused of stealing a car. As the newlyweds shared their experience with everyone, sitting around the dorm, someone was missing- Jaleesa. Dawnn Lewis decided to leave the show after the fifth season. However, the character of Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor was not written out. She was talked about in absencion, as being at home, or out of town. We still saw Colonel Taylor. As for his son Terrance, he was gone, too. We did get to see Mr. Gaines's son, Darnell, when he took over for him once at the Pit, and made a mess of things. CLICK HERE and watch TV SHOWS FOR FREE! REVIEW: While Dwayne continued to teach at Hillman, Whitley lost her job as an art buyer. Interestingly enough, she was sexually harrassed by her boss on this same job the previous season. At one point, during the holiday season, she worked as a waitress. Whitley a waitress? Another person to undergo a radical transformation was Freddie. Gone were the frizzy hair and weird clothes. She was planning to attend law school, and had completely revamped her image. It made a huge impression upon Ron, who started falling for her. The two could not stand one another before. Now, they were sneaking around, stealing glances and kisses every chance they got. The problem was he was still seeing Kim. Fortunately for them, Kim ended her relationship with Ron, while Freddie broke up with Shazza. They became an item, and began seeing one another publicly. Kim was not alone for very long. She was in med school now, and had started seeing her lab partner, Spencer. He finally convinced her to marry him in the last episode. Ron moved in with Dwayne and Whitley, who had become a substitute teacher. Marla Gibbs portrayed the principal. A few months into the season, following an episode which guest-starred En Vogue playing the nerdy nieces of Mr. Gaines, NBC suddenly pulled the show from its schedule. As a result, there were several episodes which were taped that have only been seen in syndication. They are known as the "lost" episodes. One included rapper Tupac Shaker, who was Lena's ex-boyfriend. He came for a visit with some of their friends, and ended up in a fight with Dorian. This episode appears on the DVD for season one. To date, no other seasons have been released on DVD. It seems as though when their "parent" show, and lead in for the past five years, "The Cosby Show" left the air in the spring of 1992, the network lost interest in "A Different World". As much as I hated to admit it, and although I disagreed with NBC's actions, the show had just about run its course. The central characters had all moved on, in one way or another. The new kids they had brought in just did not quite have the appeal as the original ones. One of the lost episodes featured Terrell, Gina, Dorian, Lena, and Charmaine making plans to share a house. The landlord was played by Billy Dee Williams, and Leslie Uggams was one of their professors, who had once dated him. Gina also saw ex-boyfriend Dion in this episode, who tried to get her back. This appeared to be a potential spin-off, but it obviously did not come to fruition. The final episode would air in July of 1993. I felt a sense of sadness leading up to it. This show had been a part of my life for so long. In the last episode, Dwayne gets an offer for a new job- in Tokyo. He had sold an invention he had created with Ron to an electronics company. When he refuses to share the credit or profits with him, the two have a huge argument. Whitley also discovers she is pregnant. Everyone throws a goodbye bash for them at the Pit. Despite Freddie's pleas for him to go, Ron does not attend. Their mothers and Dwayne's father come to town. The mothers have finally made peace with one another. Neither is happy about them moving to Tokyo with their grandchild. Before they leave, Ron and Dwayne make up, with Dwayne admitting he was wrong. A tearful Ron watches as Dwayne and Whitley walk away, hand in hand, on to yet another "different world". On a personal note, I am glad "A Different World" is one of the TV shows I finished growing up with. Wherever I was on a Thursday night, I had to watch it. It was a show which had the ability to make you laugh, and to make you think, often at the same time. It depicted an accurate, realistic portrayal of college life, relationships, and being black in America. No other show has quite been able to measure up to it. To this day, I am still a fan.
